Is the 21st Century the Century of the US or the Century of China?
—Analysis on the Shift in the Sino-US Balance of Power: A Global Perspective
Zhen Bingxi
Abstract: A superpower is also an all-around global power, being a global power involves economic, political, military, science and technology, international system, soft power and other factors. Since the early 1970s, the US position in terms of national strength has gradually declined in relative terms, but because it still maintains the advantage and source of strength as the only superpower, the decline of the US will be a long, tortuous and complicated process. China has yet to become a complete global power, but with its peaceful rise and sustainable development, it will naturally become the next global superpower, despite that it still has a long way to go to fully catch up with the US. In view of this, we have to objectively look at the strength gap between China and the US; learn from the US experience and lessons in maintaining its superpower position; rely on scientific and technological innovation to promote industrial upgrading; and participate in global governance more actively, and further enhance the international influence.
